Majes Siguas II – Irrigation project

  • Investment – US$ 654 million
  • Stage – Just starting

The Majes-Siguas Phase II project is the expansion and completion of the Majes-Siguas Special Project started in the 1980s in Peru. The objective of the project is to provide irrigation for desert wasteland on the Peruvian coast by diverting water from to the wet, mountainous region. The objective of the Phase II project is the expansion of the irrigable area from Phase I by 14,000 ha and the addition of 38,500 ha of new irrigable land.

The first phase of the project involved transporting water from the upper basin of the Colca river using the Condorama regulation dam, as well as the Tuti intake and the tunnel that runs between the basins of the Colca and Siguas rivers. Next, using the Pitay intake, water is captured and diverted to the irrigation area located on the right bank of the river. The Tuti intake and the diversion tunnel were oversized to accommodate the expected future total flow of the project, not just that of Phase I.

Expansion of Jorge Chávez International Airport

  • Investment – USD$1.2b
  • Timeline – Under Construction

The current terminal Jorge Chávez airport has 90,000 square meters and was designed to receive 13 million passengers. Since 2019, 23 million passengers were using the main Peruvian air terminal, that is,10 million more than the expected capacity.

Due to this, the airport is being expanded seeking to become the largest air complex in South America. In 2018 it received 600 hectares from the Peruvian state to build the modernization works and joined the 300 hectares that the airport already had. Thus, the size of the air terminal is equivalent to the Miraflores district.

The new control tower is 100% finished and it will go into operation January 203 with a second runway that is being finished. The new control tower, it is 65 meters high, equivalent to a 20-story building and the support buildings are built in an area of 3,100 square meters. From there, the flights of the two airstrips and takeoffs at Jorge Chávez airport will be controlled.

The second airstrip has a length of 3,480 meters and will have a network of more than 10 kilometers of new taxiways that are built with asphalt, approach lights, beaconing systems, airship aids, medium voltage systems and control and surveillance equipment

The project also contemplates the construction of a new five-story passenger terminal that will join the current airstrip, as well as a large business and commercial center. With respect to the new passenger terminal, the progress of the work is 12%. This modern building will have a system of anti-seismic insulators.
